Experienced beekeepers · 2027 Founding Cohort

Demonstrate your husbandry. Keep developing for the bees.

Have your practical competence assessed against BeeEducated’s Practical Beekeeper Standard: sixteen areas of responsible honey bee husbandry, centred on colony health, welfare and informed decisions.

Successful candidates receive a Certificate of Competence and a verifiable digital credential. Continued professional development (CPD) records ongoing learning separately from the original achievement.

2027 evidence only. No deferral to the 2028 beekeeping season. Applications close 1 April 2027. Admission and certification are not guaranteed.

Enquiries are open. Formal applications are not yet open. Registering interest is not an application or a reservation.

Is this the right route for you?

This is an assessed certification route for experienced beekeepers with access to genuine practical opportunities. Beginners should start with the separate online theory course. There is no fixed minimum colony count or years-of-experience threshold.

Application and selection

A skills scan and your story

Rate yourself against every individual published KSB, grouped by competency, and submit a bio explaining your experience, approach to husbandry, reasons for applying and suitability for the 2027 commitment. Describe where you can demonstrate the skills and where you need development.

1. Be honest about readiness

The scan is self-assessment, not evidence of competence. Acknowledging gaps helps us assess whether the seasonal route is realistic.

2. BeeEducated reviews

We consider the ratings, bio, available opportunities and support needs together. We may accept, request clarification or explain why this cohort is unsuitable. A high self-rating does not guarantee admission.

3. Agree an assessment plan

Accepted candidates agree activities, evidence requirements, support, review points and submission dates. The application informs this plan; it does not replace assessment.

Support with clear responsibilities

Developmental feedback. Candidate-owned evidence.

Our commitment

We support and encourage you at the stages agreed in your assessment plan. Feedback explains strengths, gaps and suitable next steps, including when evidence does not yet meet a KSB. Suggestions help you plan further activity; they do not guarantee a pass.

Your commitment

Gather authentic evidence promptly, act on feedback and tell us early when opportunities or circumstances change. You must demonstrate competence yourself. Evidence gathering must never justify unnecessary or harmful colony manipulation.

What evidence can look like

An inspection record explains what you observed about brood and stores, how colony history informed your judgement, why you chose an action or non-intervention, and what a later review showed. Relevant photographs and explanation can support the record. Your assessor judges sufficiency against the actual requirements; one inspection does not demonstrate the whole Standard.

Use the season while the opportunities are there

Plan evidence across April–November 2027 and submit substantive evidence monthly. Activities such as swarm management, queen work and seasonal husbandry depend on appropriate opportunities. Delay can leave a gap that cannot be recovered within this cohort.

There is no deferral to the 2028 beekeeping season. Gateway is the readiness check confirming that all mandatory requirements have sufficient assessed evidence. Candidates who do not meet Gateway requirements cannot progress to EPA through this cohort.

EPA must be completed before 31 March 2028, following successful Gateway. This fixed deadline replaces the usual three-month-after-Gateway rule for the 2027 Founding Cohort. Book early enough to complete assessment within the cohort window. It is not an extra season for gathering missing evidence. The authorised Assessment Plan governs the final assessment methods and grading.

Achievement and continued learning

A credential with a purpose

Your certificate and digital credential record demonstrated competence, the Standard version, grade and award date. Annual CPD supports continued development as beekeeping evidence, threats and guidance change. It involves learning and reflection, not payment alone, and is not annual reassessment of every practical skill.

The original achievement remains verifiable if CPD later becomes not current. Current CPD status is shown separately.
