Basic concepts can be learned quickly. Consistent competence takes longer because important situations only arise at particular points in the colony and seasonal cycle.
Why more than one season can matter
Swarm preparation, flows, dearth, queen problems, autumn preparation, winter and spring build-up create different management decisions. A beekeeper who has seen only one part of the year may not yet have had a fair opportunity to demonstrate everything.
BeeEducated’s normal window
The Practical Beekeeper Programme uses a normal 14–24 month pathway, with the earliest Gateway at 14 months. Progress depends on sufficient evidence, not simply the time elapsed.
Experience is not the same as evidence
Years of keeping bees can be valuable, but assessment still needs evidence that the required competence is being demonstrated now and against the current enrolled Standard.
